The Role of Massage When You Feel Overwhelmed
How stress builds up in the body, what relaxation massage can help with — and its limits.
Davut Aras

When we feel overwhelmed, our body tenses too: shoulders rise, the jaw clenches, breathing gets shallow. This tension in turn feeds the feeling of distress. Relaxing the body is one way to break this cycle.
What massage can do
Slow, rhythmic and gentle massage may help reduce muscle tension, deepen the breath and help you feel calmer. Our 60-minute session includes a short talk, breathing, long strokes on the neck, shoulders and back, gentle work around the ribcage and a few minutes of quiet rest.
The limits of massage
Massage is not a treatment for depression, anxiety disorders or panic attacks; these need assessment and treatment by mental health professionals. New or severe chest pain, palpitations or shortness of breath should first be checked by a doctor.
Looking after yourself between sessions
- Take short breathing breaks during the day.
- Stretch your neck and shoulders at your desk.
- Put screens away an hour before bed.
- Walk outdoors a few times a week.
- Share how you feel and seek support when needed.
