Traditional Turkish Folk Massage: History and Cultural Roots

A short journey through the heritage of traditional massage — from hammam culture to knowledge passed down in families.

Davut Aras

Healing and soothing through touch has deep roots in Anatolia — from hammam culture to midwives and families known for traditional practices. This knowledge was passed down orally, from master to apprentice and mother to daughter.

Hammam culture

In Ottoman times the hammam was a place of cleanliness, social life and rest. The rubbing and relaxing done by attendants on the warm marble stone was an everyday way to unwind, and it lives on today as a ritual of warmth, water and touch.

Knowledge passed down in families

Expressions such as “yürek kalkması”, “göbek düşmesi” and “afakan basması” are the language of this tradition. The explanations behind them may not match modern medicine, but the care, attentive touch and time given to the person remain valuable.

Tradition meets today’s knowledge

We continue this heritage with respect while following today’s standards of hygiene and safety: we listen first and refer to a doctor when needed, we never use painful or abrupt techniques, and we present our work as a traditional way to relax — not as treatment.
